From Design through Construction, An Intimate View of the making of the Memphis Grand Carousel Pavilion -  Presented by Tim Michael of designshop

It has been over a decade since the Memphis Grand Carousel’s marvelous horses stopped galloping.  The original carousel was built in 1909 and its all-wooden elements were hand crafted.  The Children’s Museum of Memphis signed a 25-year lease with the city of Memphis in 2014. The next year, it began the $1 million restoration process of the original carousel, which includes stripping the paint layer by layer from the carousel parts and doing analysis to determine the original colors used.  The museum’s $4.75 million expansion includes a lobby with glass on the north and south sides, as well as a large banquet hall that is available for special events of up to 300 people.  Tim Michael of designshop will discuss the history of the carousel and demonstrate his design process of the museum addition.  He will address the unique design and structural features of the facility, including the beautiful glue laminated wood structure of the main pavilion.

After attending this program, participants will be able to:
Understand a limited history of the carousel
Understand the design process leading to the museum addition
Become aware of a few of the unique design/structural features of the facility
Describe the application of glulam construction in the building
